Our Mental Health Department is Expanding!

We are delighted to announce, that from 5th October 2020, Steve Lawlor will be a Mental Health Consultant Solicitor for us, covering the West Midlands region.

We very much look forward to working with Steve in the future & enhancing our presence within the West Midlands.

Steve is a Mental Health Accredited Panel member & has 7 years’ experience within the field of Mental Health Law.

Steve has built up good connections with Mental Health Act Administrators, Psychiatrists, Social workers, Nurses and Community Psychiatric Nurses during his time within Mental Health in the West Midlands and is highly thought of by these professionals. 

About Steve 

Steve has particular expertise in: 

  1. Assisting and advising people who are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, both unrestricted and restricted cases
  2. Effectively communicates with people who have Autism and Learning Disability in basic English and advises them on the law. 
  3. Represents detained patients at Tribunal’s, Hospital Managers (Appeals and Renewals), CPA, professional & s117 meetings to strive to achieve the best outcome for the client, working in conjunction with the clinical team. 

Other activities 

Steve is planning to develop his own independent training, to be offered to medical professionals, Hospital Managers and Independent Mental Health Advocates (IMHA’s) under areas of complexity regarding capacity, Tribunal report writing for junior and trainee doctors and training the hospital managers on effective questioning at Hospital Manager’s Hearings & how to apply the law in complex scenarios. 

Steve is also planning on doing a Podcast series on discussing various areas of the Mental Health Act 1983 to improve the wider public’s understanding. 

Steve also sits as a member of a Hospital Manager’s panel out of the West Midlands area. 

Training 

Steve went to university at Birmingham City University and studied the Legal Practice Course at Wolverhampton University. 

Steve qualified as a solicitor in 2018 and became a member of the Law Society’s Mental Health Panel Accreditation Scheme in 2017. 

Outside of work

Outside of work, Steve supports Wolverhampton Wanderers and has a 1st Dan Black Belt in Karate.
